Pet owners urged to take care in the snow

Pet owners are being called on to make sure they look after their pets during the current cold snap, as temperatures plummet and the snow falls.

Much of the UK is expected to suffer heavy snowfalls over the coming days, with London already seeing the worst downfalls for 18 years.

But although some animals will be happy to frolic in the snow, pet owners are being told that even these animals need special care and attention during the cold snap.

Among the advice being offered to pet owners is to keep a pet's hair trim around the feet, so as to stop snow getting lodged in between the toes.

And the dangers of anti-freeze are also being highlighted, as it can be an attractively sweet tasting syrup for pets – but lethal in even small quantities.

Charities are also warning people not to leave their pets out in the cold, particularly overnight, without any means of shelter.

Snow is an even bigger problem for pet owners in the US, though, as the WTIC News Talk channel in Connecticut is warning people that coyotes, unable to track down their usual prey in the snow, are attacking family pets.
