Separation Anxiety

I need an opinion or two. A lady was all set to get one of my mother's puppies and then her vet told her it was a bad time to do it because her present dog has separation anxiety. I have always heard that the best thing to do in that case is give them a distraction. Wouldn't a buddy to play with while Mom is gone help? Once again I don't know it all.

no because the new dog will learn the others dog bad behavior then you will have two dogs will the same problem

I have found over the years that to avoid seporation anxiety is to have a 2nd dog. I tell people if they don't want 2 hybrids to go to the pound and save a life. Her female will take the pup under her wing and raise it as her won and then being alone won't be a problem anymore she won't be alone again when she leaves for work. It truely works and I have been raising and rescueing wolves and wolf dogs since 1994 and with some of the rescues I get in because they are a mess I put the boys in with a spayed female and all is well and they start playing and even get nice to us lol. put them in a pen alone and they are a nightmare howling and neurotic so in pairs they do great. Her Vet is pro spay n neuter and I have no idea if its just because of the breed or what but a 2nd dog of any breed is the answer for her female. and a male will be best.

That is how I feel about it too. there is no worry of anyone going to the pound, This lady is dedicated to her little dog. She will do anything to make it feel secure.

A pup is the answer she will be irritated by the pup for a day or so then just try to seporate them. Tell her if it don't work bring the pup back within 2 weeks you won't get the pup back lol.

We do bring troubles on ourselves don't we? mine went from ignored most of the time by previous owner to being glued to my hip but he is now understanding there are times he needs to stay home and has adjusted, only pees because he is happy to see me when we get home on occasion.

My question is how would you like to meet mr wright and fall deeply in love just to have him leave you at home alone all the time cause he wants it that way. No TV or things that a human would use to intertain themselves. Just the house or yard and its thoughts and the sounds from the world at large some life how would you like it. Animals have feelings and emotions like we do how would you like to be taught ot stay half of your life alone.

I don't know it all either, but can tell you from firsthand experience that when Rocko died if Nicky hadn't had Sparky, he would have grieved himself to death. They were together10 years and that is a long time. Then Sparky got so attached to Nicky I worried when Nicky dies in February...My vet told me another dog is a good distraction and playmate. Sparky had Peety & MR Whipples to keep up with, so he didn' t grieve as much. Yes he went around looking for Nicky, but then here were those 2 little scampers which distracted him and now he doesn't look for him much any more. But What do I know.

It can happen one of two ways. The new dog could help or the new dog could follow the example of the older dog and copy its behavior and act as if it too has separation anxiety compounding the issue.

Your mom should seek a dog trainer for advice and training for the dog she has first before adding to the issue.

Puppies are pretty resilient and if she adds the pup into the equation and it doesn't help the older dog then take the pup away that's easy but to do nothing the animal can develop Behaviour that will stay with it the rest of its life. Loneliness hurts at any age. The term Separation Anxiety says it all Separation that alone should be the answer the animal is unhappy ALONE.
I had an adult like that if I went to town without her she would tear up everything in sight. I rescued an injured male 4½ MO old he had been beaten ran over and left for dead when I found him dragging himself across a bridge. I got him into my car and took him to the vet we saved him but he was left crippled in the hind end walked duck footed but got around ok. Niki started nursing him back to health and never tore up a thing again as long as they were together I even put in a doggy door and she never tore anything up again. When Tika passed she had a couple new rescues to help with soon after and the pining stopped. She had her hands full with 2 1 yr old males to keep under control she became an alpha the 1st week it was great.

I had 2 steers and a cow and after I butchered 1 of the steers the other 2 looked for him. Then about 3 MO later a neighboring rancher leased the west pasture and when he unloaded his cattle he had 1 that looked just like Rump Roast and the 2 of them ran to the fence hollering at it when it came to the fence and they realized it wasn't him they walked away heads down so sad. That was when I realized that even cattle had emotions like we do had never thought about it before. Don't raise them any more I buy my meat now cause of that.

LOL. Funny yet not. When I was a little girl (about 3) we had a cow named Gretchen Two Spots (she was black and white but her body was totally white except two black spots.) I called her "Gretchen Stew Pot" I didn't even understand why people laughed about it I thought they were all idiots.
